Otis Escalator Drive System: The "Core Engine" of Escalator Operation
The power transmission system serves as the "power hub" of Otis escalators, comprising the drive main unit and step chain. It converts electrical energy into stable mechanical power to drive the continuous circulation of steps. The drive main unit features a highly integrated design that combines three core components: a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), a gear reducer, and a dual-circuit brake. These essential OTIS escalator parts ensure the efficient operation of the system. The driving process in Otis escalators forms a complete conversion chain from "electrical energy to mechanical energy to precise operation," relying fundamentally on the coordinated operation of the drive main unit and step chain, complemented by intelligent systems for efficient and controllable performance. The specific process can be divided into four stages: power initiation, transmission and conversion, synchronized drive, and safety control and regulation.

Stage 1: Power Initiation – Core Energy Supply from PMSM
The drive process begins with the input of electrical energy. Upon receiving operation commands, the Otis ONE® platform supplies three-phase symmetrical current to the PMSM. The motor's rotating magnetic field interacts with the magnetic field of the rotor's permanent magnets.

Stage 2: Transmission and Conversion – Relay Transmission via Reducer and Step Chain
The high-speed torque output from the motor must be converted by the gear reducer into power suitable for escalator speed. The integrally designed reducer precisely reduces rotational speed through multiple gear meshes while amplifying torque, achieving a 25% smaller volume than conventional structures. The reduced power is then transmitted to the main drive shaft, where the shaft-end drive gear achieves micron-level meshing with the step chain. Power is sequentially transmitted to each step through high-strength alloy chain plates. Combined with the wear-resistant properties of carburized pins, this ensures lossless power transmission without chain slippage even under full load.
Stage 3: Synchronized Drive – Coordinated Operation of Steps and Handrail
While driving the step chain, the main drive shaft simultaneously drives the handrail drive system via friction wheels, maintaining perfect speed synchronization between the handrail and steps (with error controlled within national standard limits). The FRN-FSD010 handrail system’s built-in tension sensor continuously monitors operating status. If speed deviation occurs, the automatic adjustment device immediately corrects tension, limiting error to within ±5% to prevent passenger discomfort. Meanwhile, the escalator step main wheels and auxiliary wheels travel along dedicated guide rails, keeping the steps horizontal at the entrance, forming standard escalator treads during operation, and leveling again at the landing before completing the cyclic motion.

Stage 4: Safety Control and Regulation – Intelligent System Guardian Throughout
During operation, the Otis ONE® platform continuously collects real-time data on motor temperature, step chain tension, brake status, and other parameters via sensors. When load changes are detected, the system automatically adjusts motor output power—reducing speed to 0.2 m/s for energy saving or stopping during no-load conditions, and accelerating to rated speed within 1 second when passengers are present. In case of anomalies such as foreign object jamming or chain plate fracture, the dual-circuit brake initiates emergency braking within 0.5 seconds through mechanical friction between brake shoes and the brake wheel, controlling braking distance within 10 cm.
This drive system has undergone verification through 1 million cycle fatigue tests and remains stable even in extreme environments ranging from -10°C to 40°C. Its characteristics of "smooth start, efficient transmission, and intelligent control" perfectly adapt to high-frequency operation demands in high-traffic locations such as subways and airports.
