Can Elevator Recalls Spark Industry-Wide Safety Change?
In July, an announcement from the Defective Product Recall Technical Center of the State Administration for Market Regulation caused a stir in the industry: Doppler Elevator Co., Ltd. recalled 4,825 MRGL-P and other elevators manufactured between February 2012 and August 2014, and Lincoln Elevator (China) Co., Ltd. recalled 1,993 LC/P8000 elevators manufactured between June 2020 and March 2021. A total of 6,818 units of equipment with safety hazards will undergo comprehensive rectification. This significant recall has once again brought elevator safety, a critical issue concerning people's livelihoods, to the forefront of public attention and served as a wake-up call for responsibility across the entire industry.
As specialized equipment closely associated with daily commuting, the safety of elevators directly impacts the well-being of countless families. The products recalled by Doppler Elevator are due to inherent electrical design deficiencies. Under extreme operating conditions such as brake insulation degradation or a coil short-circuit to ground, the brake may fail to release effectively. The Lincoln elevator's hidden dangers are even more insidious. Under unusual operating conditions, the brake contactor contacts on the control cabinet's wiring board could short-circuit, potentially causing the elevator to suddenly lose braking capability during operation, with disastrous consequences. These seemingly minor design flaws, in daily use, become like time bombs buried within the building, posing a constant threat to public safety.
It is commendable that the two companies ultimately chose to initiate free rectification, a first step in taking responsibility. More importantly, however, the entire industry needs to learn a lesson from this incident: safety isn't just a marketing slogan; it's a core principle that permeates the entire product design, production, and maintenance chain. Elevator companies should integrate preventive thinking into their DNA. During the design phase, they should strictly adhere to the latest safety standards, such as GB7588, and incorporate extreme operating simulation testing. During production, they should strengthen quality inspections of key components to prevent substandard products from entering the market. During after-sales maintenance, they should establish dynamic monitoring systems that leverage IoT technology to capture abnormal equipment data in real time.
Market regulators' tracking mechanisms ensure the effectiveness of rectifications, but a true safety defense requires companies to forge a strong foundation through self-awareness and commitment. Behind every elevator lies the trust and commitment of countless families. We hope all elevator companies will take this recall as a mirror and embed a sense of responsibility into every detail of their production, turning "elevator safety" from a promise into a tangible reality.
